The Redding Public Market Nears Its First Anniversary With Almost Its Whole Opening Lineup Intact

Single-story home with off-white siding, a blue front door, mature oak, deep lawn and concrete driveway in clear afternoon light.

Today's merchant directory on the Redding Public Market's website reads a lot like the vendor list A News Cafe ran the week the doors opened. Ice cream from 32 Below sits up front. Bad Dog still has hot dogs, and Maro Noodle House still has noodles. Fall River Brewing, Heads or Tails and Little By Little cover beer, cocktails and wine, and Noni's is still selling pizza by the slice.

The market soft-opened on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2025, according to the Record Searchlight. The anniversary falls on Wednesday, Nov. 25 this year, the day before Thanksgiving. Three weeks short of a year, the building has kept nearly everyone it opened with. The change downtown comes from two other directions: a sit-down restaurant the market's own developers are planning, and a string of businesses that have settled into the surrounding blocks since last winter.

Eleven of twelve, almost a year later

When the market opened, A News Cafe listed 12 businesses inside. Here is that list checked against today's official directory:

  • 32 Below, ice cream
  • The Bantam Kitchen
  • Bad Dog Hot Dogs
  • Bread Butchers & Cold Brewers, bakery and coffee
  • DJ Smash Burgers
  • Fall River Brewing
  • Heads or Tails, craft cocktail bar
  • Little By Little, wine bar
  • Maro Noodle House
  • Noni's Pizzeria & Slice House
  • San Marzano Market
  • Steller's Jay Gifts, listed at opening as Steller's Jay Boutique

Bantam Kitchen is the only one gone. Its owners announced the closure in a letter posted Friday afternoon, June 5, 2026, and the Record Searchlight reported it the next morning. The directory now shows a placeholder card reading "New Vendor Coming Soon," with no name attached.

That kind of continuity sets a baseline for everything else in this post. A month after opening, K2 Development Companies CEO Allen Knott told Shasta Scout the market was drawing more than 2,000 people a day. He also said nearby businesses were reporting big jumps in customers. General manager Erin Ross described the hall as packed nearly every hour. Those were December 2025 figures from the market's own leadership, not a year-end count. Still, losing one vendor in eleven months says the first-month crowd didn't fade into empty stalls.

The next opening inside comes from the owners

K2 Development Companies owns the market and led the project. In April, the Record Searchlight reported that with the market meeting expectations, the developers planned to add a sit-down restaurant. An Alcoholic Beverage Control application had gone up on the door near the shared seating area between Heads or Tails and Bread Butchers & Cold Brewers.

The applicant is Front Door Hospitality LLC, doing business as Lazzarino's. Allen Knott and Daniel Knott of K2 are its managing partners. The plan calls for table service by the south Market Center patio. The name sounds Italian, but the report said the menu wasn't confirmed and the concept was still being worked out. There was no estimated opening date in April. The market's public directory still just promises a new vendor, without saying whether that's Lazzarino's or whether anything is going into Bantam's old space.

This is a different kind of addition from the first year. The original lineup was a dozen independent counters where you order and carry your tray to a table. A table-service restaurant run by the building's owners would add a sit-down dinner option to a hall built around walk-up ordering.

The new businesses are opening outside the market

Most of what's new near 1551 Market St. this year opened outside the building, often within a block.

Baileys Book Nook came first. It opened downtown on Dec. 5, 2025, and its owners told KRCR that being near the Public Market brought more foot traffic and a steady opening stretch.

Shop Around the Corner Books was reported in April to be moving to California Street, next door to Theory Coffee, per the Record Searchlight. That puts two independent bookstores within walking distance of the market.

Shards & Thorns, a floral design and stained-glass studio, picked the White Building downtown for its first location, the Record Searchlight reported in April.

Logic Ciderbar & Alehouse is the one most likely to get mixed up with the market, since the same April article that broke the Lazzarino's news also covered it. Logic is separately owned, by Alan Colwell and Hailey Friesner. It pours cider, craft beer and hard seltzer, plus nonalcoholic beer and kombucha. Its grand opening was set for First Friday on May 1, 2026. It's at 1534 Market St. in Market Street Alley, between Yuba and Butte, across the street from the market.

Not every plan has come through. In April, the Record Searchlight reported plans for a Founders Bar in the former DataRay building at 1675 Market St. By July, the same paper said the plan looked shelved and the building was being marketed for lease. So the surrounding blocks are still filling in, one storefront at a time, and the space a few doors north of the market is still open for the right tenant.

A downtown holiday calendar with the market in the middle

With the market's lineup steady and new neighbors around it, the market is an easy place to start or end a downtown evening this season. Here are the confirmed dates, in order:

  1. First Friday, Friday, Nov. 6, 5 p.m. That's tomorrow, for anyone reading this on Thursday. Viva Downtown organizes the monthly art, music and culture night, per Visit Redding. Logic chose this same monthly night for its grand opening in May.
  2. Redding Garden of Lights opens Friday, Nov. 20, 5 p.m. Turtle Bay Exploration Park lights up the McConnell Arboretum and Botanical Gardens with more than a million lights across ten acres. Tickets are $25, and the season runs through Jan. 3, 2027. The usual way in is across the Sundial Bridge. There's also an accessible entrance with parking at the west end of the gardens, near 1100 Arboretum Drive.
  3. Annual Holiday Artisan Fair, Saturday, Nov. 21, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the first one, at Cheesecakes Unlimited, 1135 Pine St. Admission is free.
  4. Market anniversary, Wednesday, Nov. 25. It's one year since the soft opening. The market hadn't posted any anniversary event as of this writing.
  5. Redding Christmas Tree Lighting, Friday, Dec. 4.
  6. Lighted Christmas Parade, Saturday, Dec. 5, 6 to 8:30 p.m., downtown.

Two things repeat inside the market through December. Visit Redding's venue page lists Brain Battle Trivia running through Dec. 28 and Brunch at the Market through Dec. 27.

One practical note on hours. The market's site lists two different sets. The page header says Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Visit page's main text says 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Each counter also keeps its own schedule, so check the Redding Public Market's site before planning an early coffee or a late Sunday.

A food hall that keeps 11 of its 12 vendors through nearly its whole first year gives the blocks around it something steady to build on. That's what Market Street has been doing. If you live near downtown and want to know how a year of new storefronts might show up in your own home's value, Upside Real Estate will walk you through it over coffee at Bread Butchers.
